Distributed Electrical Sensing - Synaptec
The world’s only passive electrical sensor networks for high-voltage power system monitoring
Delivering actionable information to improve reliability and reduce operational cost
Our DES technology is quick and easy to install on power grids, offshore wind and industrial networks.
Our Passive Secondary Converter (PSC) attaches easily to secondaries of any industry-standard CT or VT, at any voltage or current level. The PSC converts the secondary quantity into optical signal in the fibre, and is packaged as a single-phase (outdoor) or three-phase (rack-mountable) component.
A significant majority, approximately 69%*, of HV cable failures are concentrated in joints and terminations, areas that traditional monitoring techniques tend to overlook. (DNV. GL)
Scope of work
Mixed Circuit Protection
Synaptec reduces outage and operational costs with the world’s only distributed sensor technology for operators of complex power systems.
Synaptec’s passive sensors are ideal for faulted section identification in mixed or hybrid circuits containing both overhead lines (OHL) and remote cable sections, cable tail ends, or OHL and transformers.
Synaptec enables discrete auto-reclose over longer distances, distinguishing overhead from underground faults in millisecond timescales.
Synaptec’s Mixed Circuit Protection (MCP) solution installs easily to deliver reliable and secure faulted section identification in more locations over longer distances than conventional and optical current transducers. For more information, you can read our paper here.
Cable Condition Monitoring
69%* of HV cable failures occur in joints and terminations, which are overlooked by conventional monitoring techniques.
As Synaptec sensors require no control power, data networks or expensive civil works, it is now feasible to instrument these remote locations to provide early warning of more cable failure modes than with conventional technology.
This dramatically improves availability and safety, while reducing OpEx and outage cost over the life of the network.
Why choose DES?
Quick to Install
Fast and safe to install. Commissioned from a single location. No maintenance requirements.
DES deployments are simple and elegant, avoiding complex wiring and telecoms. Full sensor networks supporting protection or monitoring are typically installed and commissioned in days rather than over weeks.
Synchronized Measurments
Measurements synchronized to within one microsecond and processed in under 200 microseconds.
DES delivers the world’s fastest protection and monitoring systems. Make instant and informed decisions on your network with synchronised waveform data.
Passive Sensor Networks
Fully passive sensing of voltage and current. Using optical fibre within power networks, Distributed Electrical Sensing enables high-fidelity measurements of voltage and current at many locations over distances of up to 60 km from a substation.
